Kindle a flame to lighten the dark …,

“Kindle a flame to lighten the dark and take all fear away”.
So began our Advent Carol Service – with this beautiful chant from the Island of Iona in Scotland, accompanied by musicians Linda on the organ and Kennedy on violin.

“The true light … was coming into the world” was the theme, explored through readings from Genesis, Isaiah, Micah, Luke, Malachi and John, and concluding with reflection on the words of Quaker George Fox that there is “that of God in every man” – the ‘inner light’ to guide us all.

It was a joy to be joined by Pastor Alex and members of the Russian Evangelical Church, as well as members of the Nepalese Worship Group, together with many others, at this special time in Advent.

Advent Study Group

Our Advent Study Group ‘What can we really know about Jesus?’ concluded on Thursday.

The last of the 5 weekly sessions asked ‘What do we think we know now?’ and ‘What question will you ask next?’ – leading to a lively and engaging discussion.

Look out for details of the forthcoming Lent Study Group starting in February.

Bishop Sean Semple at St Andrew’s

We were blessed to have Bishop Sean with us on Sunday, presiding and preaching at our service.
Bishop Sean and his wife, Jenny, also joined us afterwards for a shared lunch and some lovely impromptu singing by Menuka, Appy and some of the other ladies.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to a beautiful service and delicious lunch and fellowship afterwards.

Charity Concert at St Andrew’s

This Saturday saw another wonderful concert at St Andrew’s by Lena and Katerina Stern with Nikita Makarov and Selin Eroğlu.

The concert raised 12,600 TL for the Anglo-Turkish Association, who support local causes – currently children with disabilities and children from difficult backgrounds. Tim Morgan from the ATA explained the valuable work they do in North Cyprus.

Lena Stern began the concert with a very moving ‘Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ’ (I cry to you, Lord Jesus Christ) by J S Bach; played on the church organ and dedicated to the memory of our organist and Director of Music, Earl Moffitt.

Many thanks to Rae Tilley for organising this evening of beautiful music and to all who supported it.
